ARE E-CIGARETTES SAFE?
WHAT ARE E-CIGARETTES?
E-cigarettes have drastically increased in popularity since entering the US market in 2007. Unlike traditional cigarettes that burn tobacco, e-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that heat liquids containing nicotine, flavorings, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and chemicals into an aerosol.
NEGATIVE HEALTH EFFECTS: E-cigarette aerosol is not harmless water vapor. It contains chemicals that are known to cause cancer, birth defects, asthma and, COPD. They may also contain tiny metal particles that can become lodged in the lungs.
- CAVITIES: Some e-cigarette flavors contain sugar-like particles and may increase the risk of cavities.
- NICOTINE: Nicotine has been shown to negatively effect memory, attention, and the heart/circulatory system. Nicotine can also cause severe gum disease
EXPLOSIONS AND FIRES: There are multiple case reports of e-cigarettes exploding or catching on fire, resulting in serious head, neck, and mouth harm. CAN E-CIGARETTES HELP YOU QUIT SMOKING?
Unfortunately, the evidence says no. Smokers who use e-cigarettes are 59% less likely to quit than those who do not use them.
E-cigarettes are not a safe alternative to cigarettes and can cause many serious oral and systemic health problems.
