Herbst Orthopedic Appliance
WHAT IS A HERBST ORTHOPEDIC APLIANCE?
A Herbst is a functional orthopedic appliance that is used to help correct jaw growth discrepancies. It is custom designed for each growing patient and made of surgical-grade stainless steel. A Herbst has 4 crowns and 2 telescoping arms that exert an upward, backward force on the top jaw and a downward, forward force on the lower jaw. Herbst treatment can be combined with Invisalign (invisible, clear aligners), metal braces, or clear braces to correct both jaw growth and tooth alignment problems. This conservative, interceptive, growth-guiding, orthopedic treatment can help prevent the necessity of jaw surgery in the future.
WHAT TO EXPECT
At your first appointment, separators (small elastic rings) will be placed between your back teeth where the Herbst crowns will be cemented. These separators will create small spaces to accommodate the thickness of the Herbst crowns. Our lab will custom-fabricate the Herbst and it will be cemented using zinc phosphate cement. It is normal to experience temporary lip and cheek sensitivity and speech changes. Thankfully, these typically disappear within the first 3-10 days of treatment. We recommend reading or singing out loud to help your speech adapt more quickly.
HOW DO I CLEAN MY HERBST?
We recommend cleaning your Herbst with a Waterpik, toothbrush, and fluoride toothpaste. Gingivitis (infected, inflamed gum tissue) will result if the tissue surrounding the Herbst crowns is not cleaned properly.
HOW LONG DO I WEAR MY HERBST?
The Herbst is worn for approximately 12 months with severe cases requiring additional time.
WHAT IF MY HERBST BARS ACCIDENTALLY COME APART?
