Overview

Kentucky Orthodontics & Invisalign is proud to offer clear ceramic braces to our patients throughout the Bluegrass state. Our clear ceramic braces work just like traditional metal braces, except that you can hardly tell that you're wearing them. Each smooth bracket is made of a translucent material to seamlessly blend in with your natural teeth. The common misconception is that clear ceramic braces are easily stained, but they are not. However, they do require more attention than metal braces because they do use clear elastic bands that can become discolored or yellowed if not properly maintained. With Invisalign or ClearCorrect (removable teeth aligning systems), patients run the risk of prolonging treatment if an aligner is lost or not worn for the recommended amount of time. Therefore, clear ceramic braces are a great option because they offer around-the-clock treatment. Our practice also offers self-ligating braces, which do not require the use of elastic bands. About Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces are made of clear or tooth-colored brackets, which makes them less visible than traditional metal braces. Therefore, they are an ideal choice for older teenagers and adults who are getting braces for the first time. Although they are cosmetically appealing, they do require more care as they are more brittle than metal braces. However, they offer the same great results.

What to Expect

On the day of your appointment, we will polish and clean your teeth with a specific tooth cleaner. From there, a sealant will be applied to your teeth before the edges of your teeth are lightly smoothed, if necessary. The clear brackets will then be strategically placed on each tooth. Once the brackets are in their correct position, we will use an ultra violet (UV) light to instantly harden the glue. This simple process does not cause any pain and secures the braces to your teeth. The final step involves threading the  metal wire through the braces and using tiny white bands to secure the wire to the braces(if needed).  The application process usually takes several hours to complete.

Aftercare

After your clear ceramic braces are placed, you may experience some discomfort while your teeth, gums, and lips adjust to the appliance in your mouth. Although pain and discomfort are normal, these symptoms should improve over time, and can be eased with wax that protects mouth from the metal brackets or over-the-counter pain reducers.

Although clear ceramic braces don't easily stain, the elastic bands that are placed over your braces can stain with the consumption of certain foods such as coffee, curry dishes, fruit juices, and more. Therefore, we recommend that patients do their best to avoid these foods in order to maintain the appearance of the braces. Brushing, flossing, and using a mouthwash after every meal will also ensure proper appearance and oral hygiene.
