Tips to Help Your Teens Get the Most out of Invisalign® Treatment

Featured Image

Teenagers often feel embarrassed or self-conscious when they have a mouthful of "old-school" painful metal braces. Metal brackets and wires also make it hard to participate in school activities, like contact sports due to blisters from rubbing against tissue. Now, Invisalign treatment offers teens a more discreet and painlessly convenient way to straighten their teeth. Not only do they participate in ALL school activities, but they also do not MISS school due to frequent braces adjustments every 4-6 weeks. They come in for Invisalign progress checks every 16-20 weeks. It helps them get straight A's in school by not missing school.

Kentucky Orthodontics & Invisalign has helped countless young patients achieve their ideal smiles through Invisalign clear aligners. These aligners are practically invisible, so your teen can wear them with complete confidence!

Worried about how your teen will handle this orthodontic treatment? Parents living in Lexington, Georgetown, Winchester, Mount Sterling/Owingsville, Richmond, Nicholasville, KY, and Boynton Beach, FL, can call Dr. Douglas D. Durbin for an Invisalign consultation. Below, our trained orthodontist provides helpful information and advice about ensuring their treatment is successful.

Wear Invisalign aligners for 24 hours a day

Invisalign aligners are designed to be worn TWENTY FOUR HOURS PER DAY! ONLY removing for 15 minutes at a time for brushing and/or eating. This ENSURES your teen achieving their desired "textbook" life-lasting beautiful smile in the shortest amount of time possible. (25% LESS time than painful metal braces!)

Take out the aligners to eat and brush your teeth

Teens should take out the aligners for ONLY FIFTEEN MINUTES (or less) when eating or drinking anything other than water. This keeps the aligners clean and prevents the teeth and gums from staining. However, with PROPER oral hygiene twice per day, it is POSSIBLE to eat and drink with them in, if ever necessary due to extenuating circumstances.

Clean aligners regularly

In addition to normal brushing and WaterPik use, your teen should also clean their Invisalign aligners at least once in the morning and once before bed. This can be done with a soft-bristled toothbrush and lukewarm water. Dr. Durbin can review the proper technique with your teen during an initial consultation or follow-up appointment.

Follow up with our team every 2 – 4 weeks

Since this is a progressive orthodontic treatment, parents and teens should follow up with Dr. Durbin using our virtual contact system and getting new aligners every 16-20 weeks.  We find that our personalized approach increases their overall  success in achieving a LIFE-LASTING PERFECT SMILE.

Kentucky Orthodontics & Invisalign works with families in Lexington, Georgetown, Winchester, Mount Sterling/Owingsville, Richmond, Nicholasville, KY, and Boynton Beach, FL. We make it easy to schedule follow-up appointments either virtually and/or in-person.

It's okay if you misplace an aligner!

Although the aligners are made of very durable material, they're not indestructible. Teens should handle aligners with care to avoid damage and store them in a hard case when not in use. This keeps them clean and ensures they last for the entire weekly changing protocol of the Invisalign treatment period.

However, Dr. Durbin understands that it's not uncommon for young people to damage or misplace an aligner. Since we dispense 16-20 aligners at a time, it is an easy "fix" to simply (immediately) place the NEXT successive aligner in place, so progress to date is not lost.
