Frequently Asked Questions

AT WHAT AGE SHOULD MY CHILD HAVE AN ORTHODONTIC EXAMINATION?

Unless you suspect a problem at an earlier age, the initial orthodontic examination should take place around age seven. This examination may or may not lead to immediate treatment. After evaluating your child, the orthodontist may simply want to check or observe your child periodically while their permanent teeth come in. Early diagnosis and treatment can help guide teeth into the right position and possibly prevent any major procedures.

HOW LONG DOES TREATMENT USUALLY LAST?

Every patient is different, so timelines may vary. Treatment to twist or rotate teeth can be corrected easily in a few weeks or months. Other treatments, such as closing large gaps or correcting overbites can take longer. Please consult with your orthodontist for an estimate on the timeline for your treatment.

WILL I HAVE TO WEAR RETAINERS AFTER MY BRACES COME OFF?

Each patient’s individual situation is different. Your orthodontist will determine and design the retainers specific to you, if needed. Most teeth have a tendency to return to their original alignment, therefore, some form of appliance or retainer will usually be required. This allows for your smile to be maintained for the long run.
