What Are Invisalign Clear Aligners?

At Kentucky Orthodontics & Invisalign, Dr. Durbin specializes in Invisalign treatments to create the dazzling smile that you deserve. We hold the highest level of Invisalign certification (Elite 1%) to provide exceptional orthodontic care, plus we are the only practice in Kentucky that offers Surgical Invisalign. You can rest assured that when you choose our practice for your Invisalign needs, you will receive the highest-quality care to protect your investment in a life-lasting smile. Invisalign is a great choice for adults OR teens who desire straighter teeth. Unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign aligners are clear, removable trays that offer both comfort and cosmetic appeal. However, the benefits of Invisalign goes beyond aesthetics. With Invisalign, there are no food restrictions, fewer office visits, virtually no discomfort, and no difficulty with normal cleaning (as there are with traditional metal braces). You can carry on with your normal routine while correcting your teeth without anyone knowing you are wearing an appliance. We also offer Acceledent and Propel's VPro5 to CUT TREATMENT TIME IN HALF! Invisalign is especially effective for men, women and teens with:

  • Malocclusion or "bad bite"
  • Crowded teeth
  • Excessive spacing or gaps between teeth
  • Overbite or underbite
  • Surgical Invisalign needs
  • Herbst Orthopedics Invisalign needs
  • Impacted canine retrieval

If you are concerned about the appearance of your teeth but do not want to wear traditional braces, we understand. Come into our office and talk to our experienced orthodontists about your options. We will gladly listen to your concerns and answer your questions about our faster treatment options with Invisalign.

Do I Qualify for Invisalign Clear Aligners?

Adults and teens who are interested in a less obvious alternative to traditional braces can be prime candidates for Invisalign clear aligners. This choice can be well-suited for treating dental malocclusion (an overbite, underbite, crossbite, or open bite), a narrow arch, crooked or crowded teeth, and gaps between teeth. Resolving such problems can improve jaw function, comfort, and speaking and eating abilities. Invisalign teeth aligners are also easily removed from the mouth, allowing Lexington, KY teens and adults to savor their favorite food items with no dietary limitations and floss and brush their teeth without cumbersome appliances interfering with their efforts. During your visit to Kentucky Orthodontics & Invisalign, we will take dental x-rays and provide an evaluation to determine if Invisalign clear aligners are an ideal choice for you.

How Do Invisalign Clear Aligners Work?

Once you have opted to have the Invisalign Clear Aligners treatment, Dr. Durbin will photograph your smile (from several angles), take digital X-rays (less radiation than traditional film X-rays), and make a laser camera "impression" of your teeth (which mean no more physical impressions with materials that may make patients gag). Then, a series of custom patented material plastic aligners will be created for your specific mouth structure so that precise changes can be made to your teeth - one-fourth of 1mm at a time for virtually zero discomfort. You will also have the option of adding the Acceledent or VPro5 to your treatment plan as well. Acceledent and VPro5 are devices that accelerate teeth movement up to 50% FASTER and allow for a better Invisalign tray fit. You can expect to have several, regular check-ups with Dr. Durbin every 8 - 12 weeks to document your progress and to make subtle adjustments when necessary. We have recently pioneered the innovation of "Long-Distance Convenience Invisalign" for our out-of-state or out-of-country patients and super busy executives with the need for "On-line Diagnosis and Treatment" convenience. Feel free to ask us about this new more efficient method of pain free treatment.

What Results Can I Expect from Invisalign Treatment?

Your orthodontic care is dependent on your specific condition, but typically most patients wear Invisalign for 12-18 months. However, with Acceledent and Propel's VPro5 technologies, you may be able to cut your treatment time by up to 50%. During your initial exam, Dr. Durbin will discuss the cost of Acceledent and/or VPro5 and determine how long you will need to wear Invisalign.  Attachments and IPR (interproximal reduction polishing/smoothing) technologies are a key to best practices treatment results.

Throughout your entire treatment process, you will have scheduled convenient follow-up appointments every 8-12 weeks so that we may carefully monitor your progress; we have also pioneered "Long-Distance Convenience Invisalign" using leading edge online technologies that can reduce your in-office visits even more dramatically. These methods allow us to thoroughly examine your teeth as they improve their position and angle. At each step, Dr. Durbin will provide you information on each stage of your treatment progress toward perfection. Typically, new aligners are changed every week. The highest "compliment" with Invisalign treatment is, "no comments at all", because almost no one even notices you are undergoing treatment. This "nearly invisible" treatment is one of the most appealing aspects of this superior technology.

How Often Can I Remove My Invisalign Clear Aligners?

After you have been fitted for your aligners, you will need to wear them continuously; removing them for a maximum of 15 minutes ONLY for eating and hygiene is the TRUE SECRET for the fastest and most perfect treatment times and results. This allows time for you to remove your aligners so you can enjoy all your meals, which is not possible with traditional braces. Once you have finished eating, you will need to brush and water-floss your teeth before reinserting your Invisalign aligners. We also recommend that you lightly brush or rinse your aligners as well. Once you have put them back into place, you may go about your day as normal. Remember, keeping your appointments is also key to advancing toward your perfect life-lasting smile.

Invisalign Clear Aligners FAQ

Does Invisalign hurt?

No, Invisalign doesn't hurt. However, for some people, it may make their teeth feel a little sore when they first begin the treatment or when they change to a new tray. This soreness is typically mild and usually goes away as your teeth get used to the new aligner.

How long does it take to straighten your teeth with Invisalign clear aligners?

In most cases, a treatment plan with Invisalign clear aligners will take about 12 - 18 months to straighten your teeth.

How long do you usually wear Invisalign clear aligners every day?

You will need to wear your Invisalign custom trays continuously. Removing them to eat or brush and floss your teeth is fine, but it is recommended that you put them back in after 15 minutes to get the quickest results.

When are the Invisalign trays changed out for new ones?

Typically, new aligners are changed every week. Dr. Durbin generally schedules his patients for a checkup every 8 - 12 weeks to monitor progress and make adjustments.
