Surgical Orthodontics Overview
Surgical orthodontics are a type of treatment that helps to correct complex dental issues in adults and teens over the age of 16 whose jaws have completely developed. Although each patient case varies, oral surgery is performed to treat common conditions such as a severe "bad bite," facial bone deformities, and malocclusion. Typically, treatment also includes the use of an oral appliance or braces. Dr. Durbin is highly-trained and experienced in performing maxillofacial surgery. We boast 7 locations throughout Kentucky that are fully furnished with state-of-the-art equipment and modern technology to provide you with outstanding care. With jaw surgery and the use of Invisalign or traditional braces, you can obtain the smile you desire. Call our Kentucky office today to learn more.

"Great group!!!"- M.W. / Facebook / Dec 15, 2014
"I began my journey in February with Drs Durbin and Huang and chose to go with Invasaligns. I am very happy with my braces and sorry that it took so long to get them. On July 20, I had jaw surgery with Dr. VanSickels. Dr. Durbin worked closely with my oral surgeon to ensure that I could transition back into my braces soon after surgery. A week after surgery I was back into my Invasaligns with minimal pain. If you want or need to have this surgery in conjunction with braces, I highly recommend both Doctors. Having this surgery while being in Invasaligns does work and can be done with great results. I can't wait to see the final outcome once I have completely healed and the Invasaligns do their magic!"- S.D. / Google / Jun 11, 2016
About the Procedure
When you have an improper bite, or asymmetrical jaw, this can cause both functional and cosmetic problems that can negatively impact your quality of life. Such conditions may include the inability to eat normal food or chew properly, impaired speech, severe pain, and more. Jaw surgery will correct misalignment of the jaw, but Invisalign or metal braces will be needed to improve teeth alignment. Dr. Durbin will perform a thorough evaluation and create an individualized treatment plan that is unique to your condition and facial anatomy.
What to Expect with Surgical Orthodontics
Your orthodontic surgery will be performed under general anesthesia and may take several hours to complete. During this time, we will monitor you closely to ensure proper care. Once you are cleared to go home, we suggest that you rest and take about 2 weeks for recovery and healing. Typically, your first follow-up appointment will be scheduled 2 weeks after surgery. Your appointments are essential as they allow us to check your progress. Once your jaw is healed, Invisalign or metal braces will be applied, which are usually worn for about 6 – 12 months.
Surgical Orthodontics Aftercare
Our orthodontists will talk to you about how to properly care for your surgical site. If you have any questions about how to care for your incisions, are experiencing side effects, or suspect that you have an infection, please call our office immediately. Every patient who has a surgery of any kind has the chance of complications and we want to know how you are doing. Please call with your questions and we will be happy to assist you.
