We know the importance of achieving a beautiful smile and the health benefits that come along with straighter teeth. Many of our patients who choose fixed braces, often have to wear elastic bands as well. Placing elastic bands can be very time-consuming and even frustrating. They are also very easy to misplace and can stain or yellow when consuming some of your favorite foods like pizza or coffee. Therefore, we are so excited to offer self-ligating braces, which don't require the use of tiny elastic bands. If you are interested in correcting your smile with self-ligating braces, call us at Kentucky Orthodontics & Invisalign today. Our friendly staff can set you up with a free consult at any of our Northeast Kentucky offices.
Self-Ligating Braces Reviews
About Self-Ligating Braces
Made of stainless steel like traditional metal braces or clear ceramics, your new self-ligating braces will straighten your teeth with a built-in clip that holds the archwire in place. Not having an elastic to hold the archwire in place means less friction in your mouth, a decrease in the amount of pressure on your teeth, and more comfort. Self-ligating braces also offer quicker teeth movement (about 6 months faster) compared to conventional braces and fewer office visits because there are no elastics to replace.
What to Expect
Before placing your self-ligating braces, Dr. Durbin will thoroughly clean and air dry your teeth. Next, we will apply a bonding agent on each bracket and place them on your upper and lower teeth. A UV light will then be quickly guided along the brackets to dry and secure the bond. Once we have connected your metal archwires to your brackets, you will be free to return to your daily activities. Typically, there is no need for a numbing agent as this process usually moves very quickly without discomfort. You can also expect to visit our office about every 2 weeks for routine adjustments.
Although self-ligating braces do not require elastics, the aftercare instructions are usually the same as traditional metal braces. The good news about self-ligating braces is that they are less prone to having food debris stuck inside the round-edged brackets. It is still very important to brush and floss after eating, or at least twice a day to remove bacteria. Improper oral hygiene can cause tooth decay and serious gum issues. We also encourage you to visit your dentist at least twice a year for professional dental cleanings.
